Traditional Remedies for Better Sleep

Here are some traditional herbs that are used in naturopathy to aid sleep. Grown in different parts of the world, they are available almost everywhere for their effective medicinal properties, in varied forms such as capsules, tea, sachets, oil and others.

  1. Lemon Balm:
    It belongs to the mint family and was originally found in south-central Europe but now available in most places. The herb is great for the nervous system and cures anxiety and helps in regulating sleeping pattern. In tea form it is used to help in digestion as well. It has many benefits and traditional doctors have been using it for centuries. Lemon balm products can be found in the homes of all those with little kids too as good for fussy stomach and putting them to sleep.
  2. St John's wort:
    This is a flowering plant that is used widely in alternative treatments. It is known for its antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties. It grows in the wild and could have been used in ancient times as well. It is an indigenous remedy to be taken in right proportion to elevate mood and help in good quality sleep.
  3. Hops:
    A familiar word for Beer lovers, Hops is a flower used to make beer. While it is used as a stabilizing agent in the drink, it comes in many forms and is considered a mild sedative. It is anti anxiety and known to treat insomnia. Hops are also great for their antibacterial effect and keeping the system healthy for a good night sleep.
  4. Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha):
    Popularly used in Ayurveda, this herb originating from India, is supposed to have a great effect on the nervous system apart from other benefits. The root of this plant is full of therapeutic value. It reduces stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia. Taken over time, it regulates the system and keeps one healthy and feeling fresh.
  5. Valerian:
    A perennial flowering plant, white and pink in colour and originally from Europe and parts of Asia, is picked for its root. Valerian roots are used for relaxation and sleep purposes. It doesn’t cause morning drowsiness and regulates nerve cells easing any anxiety. It is a great stress reliever as it is considered a natural way to keep stress hormones in check. Crude extract of the valerian root comes in the form of capsules and is easily available in pharmacies and health stores.

The remedy to a bad night’s sleep is the unavailability of a good mattress, which, of course you can buy from one of the top mattress shops in India.
