The World Sleep Day is celebrated on 13th March, and this year is the 13th edition. The slogan for this year is rightly framed – ‘Better Sleep, Better Life, Better Planet’, has it covered.

A day tagged to celebrate the goodness of sleep, and an action statement on vital issues concerning sleep. It is conducted by the World Sleep Day Committee of World Sleep Society with an objective to reduce the effects of sleep problems on the society through better prevention techniques of sleep disorders. World Sleep Day falls on Friday before the vernal or spring equinox each year.

The importance of sleep has only further increased in the times we are living in. According to somnologist  Dr Himanshu Gupta, Founder Aviss Health, “We are living in very insecure times where people are suffering from anxiety of all that is happening in our world, from deadly virus fear to economic instability and general world events. Sleep is the simplest way to disconnect and overcome anxiety. We also save resources when we sleep more. A day dedicated to sleep brings it more in the spotlight and people are once again forced to relook at their sleep habits and well being.”

Be it mental well being or physical well being, sleep is an absolute necessity. According to Dr Miten Sheth, Surgeon, The Knee Clinic, Mumbai, “Discussion on Sleep is very relevant to our times. As Orthopedic surgeons we see a lot of overused muscle injuries in athletes. Often times, insufficient sleep can prove to be life-threatening if not addressed the way it deserves. Research studies have pointed to the importance of sufficient sleep before participating in physical training or any game. As far as the older generation is concerned, arthritis responds best to rest. Heaviness, stiffness and constant discomfort with activity is the hallmark of osteoarthritis. Such kind of pains can be relieved by consistent, good sleep.”

The body indeed needs time to recover at the end of every day. Here are some key reasons as to why exactly.

Sleep Benefits:

Increased Concentration

The right quota of sleep can improve one’s cognitive or thinking abilities, besides memory retention. Our thinking skills sharpen when our brain is refreshed and working to its optimum.

Despite often neglected, sleep, to your surprise, can prove to be an excellent workout routine. Besides, preventing you from late-night munching, it also by its very nature burns calories.

 Healthy Energy

Energy is heightened if the body has been given a chance to recharge to its fullest. Sports people need rest to rejuvenate their energy supplies. Resting releases cortisol, which helps in recovery

Less calories

Despite being often overlooked, sleep has the ability to serve as a surprisingly good workout routine. Not only does sleeping more prevent you from late night snacking, it also by its very nature burns calories.

Better Immunity

Good sleep ensures your body produces necessary antibodies to combat viruses in the air. A weakened immune system is a natural by-product of a body functioning at subpar levels.

Emotional well-being

Not receiving sufficient sleep can significantly affect our social abilities. The mind turns out fuzzy to receive communication cues when exhausted or tired, and impacts how we respond to other’s behavior.

Finally, as we can see for a positive existence and fuller life with better resilience and more energy, sleep is a prerequisite, and as it goes, it usually starts by knowing where to buy mattress online.
